Transition

We believe that children settle best when they have a key person to relate to, who knows them and their parents well, and who can meet their individual needs.

Research shows that a key person approach benefits the child, the parents, the staff and the setting by providing secure relationships in which children thrive, parents have confidence, staff are committed and the setting is a happy and dedicated place to attend or work in. We want children to feel safe, stimulated and happy in the setting and to feel secure and comfortable with staff.

We also want parents in Sheffield to have confidence in both their children's well-being and their role as active partners with the setting.

We aim to make the setting a welcoming place where children settle quickly and easily because consideration has been given to the individual needs and circumstances of children and their families.

This is an important time for families and so we cater to each individual need and our settling in policy is flexible to allow us to meet the diverse needs of children and their families. Firstly we meet with you and your child and allocate a key worker that will be responsible for the initial induction into nursery, this key worker will continue to work with your child throughout their settling in sessions building a trusting relationship with them.

Our registration documents are designed to help us to get to know your child quickly and so that we can deliver a high quality of care based on their individual needs and likes. Each child and family require varied lengths of time to get used to being in a new environment and so we ask that a minimum of three settling session are attended to give us a clearer view on how many sessions a child may need before they are comfortable with the staff and routines.

Of course some children may still appear a little upset at being left and this can be a difficult time for parents and carers and so we do our best to reassure you that your little one is fine after a few moments. We take pictures and videos of their time at nursery and store them on a memory stick that you can view at home so that you can see what sort of things they get up to while you are away.

Each settling in session is an hour long, this gives us enough time to sooth a child and for them to begin to explore, but is not too long for them to be anxious or upset. There is no maximum amount of settling in for a child they are given all the time they need and these sessions are not charged.
